Occupational Therapy focuses on functional tasks that increase a child's ability to perform daily living skills. Some of these skills include:
- Self-feeding, getting dressed/undressed
- Appropriately manipulating toys
- Holding multiple items simultaneously
- Visually attending to a task
- Exploring different sensory experiences
Physical Therapy focuses on building strength and endurance to safely navigating through one's environment. Pediatric physical therapists (PTs) work with children and their families to assist each child in reaching their maximum potential to function independently and to promote active participation in home, school, and community environments. Goals may include:
- Positioning during daily routines and activities
- Expanding mobility options
- Using equipment effectively
- Facilitating safety for the home and community
- Providing information on the child’s physical and health
care needs
Speech Therapy focuses on a number of fundamental and often medically-necessary skills. Many of the children at Abi's Place are still learning to eat a variety of textures, using all of the muscles in their mouths to properly chew and swallow food. These skills are often built through oral-motor exercises. Speech therapy also focuses on building basic communication skills, such as the ability to express basic needs and make requests. By learning to communicate, children with disabilities often reduce their frustration that may lead to inappropriate behaviors.
Afterschool Tutoring: Abi's Place provides afterschool tutoring using techniques of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA). ABA is a science that studies basic human behaviors. We use this knowledge to teach a variety of skills, including play skills, prevocational skills, imitation, communication skills, early academics, and many others, in a safe, stimulating learning environment.
Family Workshops: The staff at Abi's Place is committed to consistent collaboration with families. We have held workshops to teach the family members how to interact with their children. We collect extensive documentation on each child's progress, and that information is shared with families. Implementers communicate with family members daily through face-to-face contact, phone, emails, and notes home. Each child's potential can be maximized by carrying over skills taught at school within that child's home environment
